Evolution of the MTA subway map

I recently came across a New York Times article that discussed the evolution of the MTA's subway map, especially with regards to how type, logos, color scheme, and overall design was intended to increase ridership by making the map more accessible.  I thought the concerns the designers had about proportions, fonts and the scale of everything was especially interesting and pertains largely to our street sign assignment.
